Grants Available for Social Research Fund

Social Justice Minister Carl Sargeant has announced that grants are now available from the £200,000 Welsh Assembly Government’s New Ideas social research fund. Individual grants of up to £10,000 are available for research projects that will provide an insight into the social problems that the Assembly Government needs to tackle. The research findings will help in shaping future policy.

“Organisations can often provide us with information that we wouldn’t otherwise have access to,” said Carl Sargeant.

“This Fund is a great way of getting the information that we need to develop services in the right way.”

Projects awarded funding last year included research by Save the Children to look at how organisations can work together to improve educational support for children in disadvantaged areas. The results of this project shed new light on the issues surrounding child poverty and will help to develop future policy in this area.

“Last year we received some fantastic applications and awarded grants to 19 projects,” said Carl Sargeant.

“This year, in keeping with the Assembly Government’s commitment to work closer across our public services to achieve better results, I have broadened the scope of the Fund to include projects on public service improvement.

“I am sure we will see the same high calibre of entries this year and would encourage any organisations that are interested to apply.”

The deadline for applications is June 4th 2010.  Proposals should be sent to Kate Mulready, Welsh Assembly Government, Room 3.11, Cathays Park, Cardiff, CF10 3NQ or emailed to kathleen.mulready@wales.gsi.gov.uk
