Challenge Wales: Sail training in Wales for Welsh young people
Challenge Wales is dedicated to developing life skills of young people (aged 12-25 years). This is achieved through sail training on a 72-ft round-the-world yacht, Challenge Wales. Teambuilding, communication, responsibility, respect for others and self-confidence can be learnt in a sail-training environment and now on Wales largest sail training vessel

There is silence as the crew waits…and waits…in anticipation for the signal. "Ready About" is the call from the helm, "Starboard runner coming back" shouts one of the crew members, the rest of the crew jump into action and after a short moment, collectively call "Ready". The helm shouts "Lee-Oh" and the 72-foot racing yacht ‘Challenge Wales’ tacks through 90 degrees and effortlessly sails off on her new heading.

You could be forgiven for thinking this sounds like a professional yacht racing crew, but it is actually a group of young people from Wales (who are Not in Education, Employment or Training) who a couple of hours before had never been sailing.

Young people who may sail on Challenge Wales, as part of a sail training programme may be from North, South or rural parts of Wales and may never have experienced sailing before.

Challenge Wales sails with six crew and up to ten young people with two group leaders/mentors. Sailing trips undertaken may include day sails, overnight trips or up to five day trips. Longer trips enable people to experience arriving into different ports, seeing more of the Welsh coast and enable them to potentially achieve Competent Crew certification from the Royal Yachting Association.

Both England and Scotland have identical sail training vessels but now there is no need for Welsh young people and groups to travel to the Solent or further to experience this as Challenge Wales is now on your doorstep.
